Analyzing data and presenting results with Excel

2021 NWRA webinar series

Webinar material for August 25, 2021

Webinar material for August 4, 2021

Webinar material for July 21, 2021

Data reduction and presentation are required for hydrologic and other analyses, but data rarely arrives in an analyzable form. The many features and functions of Microsoft Excel are well suited to eliminating these mismatches. For example, conditional formatting, data validation, text to columns, remove duplicates, pivot tables, and Solver add-in are essential features. Critical functions include; MATCH and OFFSET for data lookup, INT and MOD for translating between one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrays, and LEFT, MID, RIGHT, and FIND for manipulating text. Knowing a few critical features and functions exist in Excel facilitates exploring new data sets or reviewing reported data. Features and functions of Excel for wrangling disparate data sets into analyzable forms will be introduced during a series of 1-hour webinars. General approach, a few hydrologic examples will be presented, and students will be queried for problems to address during the first webinar.  Subsequent webinars will introduce features and functions by solving student supplied problems. Students will participate as we reduce data, utilize features, apply functions, and draw pictures together. Potential topics were outlined previously in a 1-day, Excel-for-Hydrology class. Outline and class material from this previous class will provide students with examples that can illustrated in class.
